I love when we’re all together! Since this photo, we’ve added one more to the bunch. My brother Mikey and sister in law Lexi, welcomed the cutest little girl in September, Lucy Jane Tagliaferri.
About 4 years ago, I had an epic idea for a family Christmas activity. (although this activity can be done any time of year) The initial inspiration came from Mister Krisp, an Instagram account specializing in creations made from Rice Krispie Treats! These creations are extraordinary… only pictures will truly explain what I mean.
Aren’t they beautiful? And all made out of Rice Krispie Treats!
My idea was a spin off of the original gingerbread house competition. Instead of gingerbread houses, I thought… how about Rice Krispie Treat houses!? I did some research and found this pin about building Rice Krispie houses. I sent the idea to my family but they liked the idea of creating things more like the Mister Krisp Instagram account, and I loved their desire for creativity!
A few weeks before the competition, I created a Pinterest inspiration board to share with family members. This gave everyone a chance to brainstorm and come up with some inspiration for what they would create on competition day. It also helped to know what kinds of candy everyone would need to create their masterpieces!
On the day of the competition, I gave each person a slab of Rice Krispie Treats and put the different kinds of candy and colored frostings nearby.ย
Then everyone got to work. I loved watching the tenacity, competition, and creativity in action! We did assign a judge who awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes…. but after the first year, we decided we would all judge anonymously. Either way works!
Here are the creations:
The following year, our family in New Jersey joined in on the fun and here are their creations:
That same year, my brother Mikey took the tradition to his in-laws when he visited for Christmas.
So much fun, right?! I look forward to this competition every year, and can’t wait to see this year’s creations! I’m hoping we can join forces and have the competition with all of our extended family at the same time, then share and judge virtually. If you and your family or friends hold this competition this holiday season, I’d love to hear how it goes. Wishing you Happy Building and Creating!
