Aside from being the last day of school, today is an exciting day for another reason! Two months from today, I’m having my second back surgery! Why did I put an exclamation on a sentence that says I will have back surgery? Am I in denial? Is it pure insanity? Yes, probably both. But also, and most importantly – optimism!

I went to Dallas earlier this week to meet the orthopedic neurosurgeons at the Texas Back Institute – Center for Disc Replacement.

It’s been 5 years since my first back surgery and I’ve struggled with chronic pain ever since. During a visit to the physical therapist late last year, I learned about the recent advancements in disc replacements. I was hesitant to have another surgery, so I didn’t think much of it. Shortly after, I went to lunch with a friend and told her about the surgery. She encouraged me to learn more, I value her opinion and friendship… so I reluctantly began to research.

I found this video by searching “artificial disc replacement” on Pinterest, of all places!

It led to further research and finally a trip to Dallas for a consultation. The surgeon said I did my research because it turns out, I am the perfect candidate for this procedure. Things couldn’t have gone better during my quick trip, except for stepping on that one ant hill while waiting to cross the street!

So – here I am… walking into the Summer of 2019 hopeful and optimistic!
