Thinking about mindset reminds me of my 2019 Reflections Post here and my thoughts about what I learned from Chronic Pain here. Both are examples of overcoming tough situations using a positive mindset. I remember many mornings waking up in a “not so positive” mindset. I struggled to be positive when some days were harder than others, or things were overwhelmingly difficult. I share this to note that even though we may fall short in cultivating a positive mindset, if we continually push ourselves in that direction, even when it may be tough, we are putting out good vibes that make our way back to us. I believe in positivity!

“Whether you think you can,

or whether you think you can’t,

you’re right!”ย  – Henry Ford

This quote speaks to me. When I was a gymnast, we were NEVER allowed to say the word “can’t.” NEVER! It was a great habit because it taught me that my mind is stronger than I think, I really do choose what I CAN or CAN’T do. In the gymnastics world – you work and train a skill for hours, days, and months. I loved the perfectionist aspect of the sport, although it did leave me a little scarred. I also love the satisfaction of mastering a skill after lots of training and failing (falling) too! When training a new trick, we also visualized ourselves completing the movement.

Achieving any goal begins in our minds! Just like recovering from an injury requires belief.

This last weekend, I was so inspired by Alex Smith’s recovery story. You can watch a trailer of his recovery story by E:60 Project 11 here. On Nov. 18, 2018, he suffered a spiral compound fracture to his tibia and fibula in his right leg. He’s since undergone 17 surgeries and countless hours of rehab — all to achieve his ultimate goal of playing again. His wife had his leg brace made into a trophy to remind them both of how far he had come. A great reminder, and a great mindset!

Any accomplishment must first begin with the simple act of believing….
